Brits who want to avoid making a claim on their pet insurance need to recognise the importance of exercise for their animals, the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) has claimed.

A spokesperson for the organisation stated: "As people's lifestyles have become increasingly sedentary, this has had an impact on pets too."

She suggested people with hamsters and other small animals handle their pets on a regular basis and buy an exercise wheel.

Playing with cats was put forward as a good way to keep them active and people with pets in hutches were advised to let them out for a run at least once a day.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson said that walking a dog can have health benefits for the owner as well as for the animal.

Research by PFMA has revealed cats and dogs are the most popular animals kept in the UK - with about seven million of each.
