16 October 2008 Motorists 'need to prepare for winter'
Motorists who do not want to end up relying too much on their breakdown cover this winter need to take preventative action, the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) has said. With poor light and bad weather conditions likely, the group has stated driving can become tiring, unpleasant and even dangerous.
However, it added there were a number of things motorists could do to make winter motoring as safe as possible.
Before hitting the road, drivers should make someone aware of their intended journey, listen to travel and weather reports and make sure they have enough fuel, the organisation advised.
It added equipping the car with items which could prove useful in an emergency was also a good idea.
A torch with spare batteries, jump leads, a warning triangle, a warm jacket, a shovel and a hands-free mobile phone were some of the things that should be considered, RMIF claimed.
Earlier this month, the group welcomed the news the Bank of England was cutting the interest rate.
