Car insurance customers who opt for a more environmentally-friendly vehicle should save money in the long run, Which? has stated.

Richard Headland from the group said: "It's a win-win situation.

"Choosing a greener car will reduce your carbon tyreprint, cost less in road tax and you'll save money every time you fill up your car."

Which? recently conducted a series of tests in a bid to come up with the most fuel efficient models on the market.

The most economical cars were revealed as the Toyota Yaris 1.4 D-4D, the Fiat Panda 1.3 Multijet and the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion 1.

All the models in the top ten were diesel vehicles and Which? highlighted switching from petrol motors as one of the simplest ways for drivers to cut costs and do their bit for the planet.

In other news, the consumer group has previously said it is important dealers are clued up on safety matters so they can offer customers the best possible advice.
