15 October 2008 Bright colours 'can save lives'

Schoolchildren As a motorist, if you hit a child the least of your concerns would probably be making a claim on your comprehensive car insurance and - to try and reduce the number of drivers who experience this - GEM Motoring Assist is suggesting all youngsters of school age should wear a fluorescent orange vest.

The road safety group would ideally like to see British Summer Time adopted all year round.

However, until this happens, it has said other precautions need to be put in place.

The organisation has stated parents and schools should do all they can to make sure children can easily be seen by all road users.

"Bright orange tabards or over-vests are very inexpensive these days and make a real visibility difference," chief executive David Williams claimed.

He insisted at the very least kids should wear reflective arm bands and shoulder belts.

Recently, GEM voiced its support for a campaign by the real ale group Camra to save rural pubs.
