14 October 2008 Inexperienced drivers 'need to be more cautious'

Car crash Youngsters are more likely to end up having to make a claim on their car insurance as the result of taking an unnecessary risk than their older counterparts, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) has claimed.

The group stated some teenage motorists put themselves and others in danger because they are under the illusion they are quick enough to avoid potential hazards.

Spokesperson Roger Vincent said, regardless of whether younger people have faster reaction times, they should not take such risks behind the wheel.

"They feel they are going to be able to stop in time and that doesn't always happen," he explained.

Mr Vincent also warned having a car full of friends could also prove distracting for relatively inexperienced motorists.

Figures from Rospa have shown 20 per cent of drivers are involved in an accident within 12 months of passing their test, with male motorists proving much more vulnerable than female road-users.
