13 October 2008 Busy junctions 'make half of young motorists nervous'

Road junction Young motorists are at particular risk of having to make a car insurance claim after being involved in an accident at a busy junction, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has claimed.

Research by the organisation has revealed 46 per cent of inexperienced female drivers and 43 per cent of their male counterparts are nervous about negotiating intersections in large towns and cities.

As a result, the group are urging parents to encourage their children to take advanced lessons to improve their confidence and skills.

Head of road safety at IAM Kevin Delaney said: "The majority of young drivers have the right attitude to driving but aren't fully prepared for dealing with more complicated junctions."

The motoring institute has also called for road safety education to be taught in schools.

In other news, IAM has urged people to modify their driving during the winter months to take into account poorer road conditions.
