30 September 2008 Under-inflated tyres have reduced life expectancy, says Protyre

Tyres which are not inflated properly have a reduced life expectancy, according to Protyre.

Research indicates that a tyre which is under-inflated by 20 per cent will reduce its life by a quarter (25 per cent), the retailer states.

In addition, poorly inflated tyres also pump out more carbon dioxide emissions than those which are in a good state of repair, increasing fuel consumption.

The organisation states many motorists are also not looking out for their own safety - or that of those around them - by not taking adequate steps to make sure their tyres are in good condition.

Simon Hiorns, retail director at the firm, states: "Tyres are the ultimate forgettable product and yet they are the only contact that the vehicle has with the road surface.

"It is, therefore, vital that they are in good condition if you want to stay safe on the road."

Mr Hiorns makes his comments ahead of Tyre Safety Month, which takes place throughout October.
