30 September 2008 Poorly inflated tyres 'can prove fatal'

Poorly inflated tyres can cause accidents Van drivers who fail to inflate their tyres properly are risking having to make a claim on their insurance, serious injury and even death, TyreSafe has warned.

The group expressed concerned that motorists are not taking the danger posed by poorly maintained tyres seriously enough.

It highlighted figures from the Department for Transport which show defective or under-inflated tyres were at least partly responsible for the deaths of 43 drivers last year and contributed to a further 984 accidents.

Meanwhile, TyreSafe's own research found less than half of motorists check their tyre pressure once a month or more.

The organisation stated tests need to be carried out every four weeks in order to prevent road traffic collisions.

TyreSafe chairman Rob Beddis said: "Under-inflated tyres can cause dramatic changes in the way a vehicle handles and corners, resulting in surprise and confusion for drivers which often results in accidents."

In August, ten digitally-animated tyre safety lessons were uploaded onto the group's website.
