26 September 2008 New road deaths figures a "positive milestone", says IAM

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has identified the latest road casualty figures from the Department for Transport (DfT) as a "positive milestone".

Figures from the DfT released in recent days indicate the number of people killed on British roads during 2007 stood at 2,946 - a reduction of seven per cent on 2006's numbers, in news that is likely to be welcomed car insurance customers and other drivers.

Neil Greig, director of the IAM Trust, states: "This new low for road traffic deaths should be acknowledged and, while there is no room for complacency, it's worth taking a moment to reflect on the success to date.

"Dropping below 3,000 deaths is a positive milestone."

He adds the IAM, which recently issued advice to motorists on how to identify and deal with road rage, will continue to help drivers, noting young, older and business drivers are important areas for skills development.
