Car insurance customers who need a new vehicle but are feeling the effects of the credit crunch could do worse than opt for a second-hand Renault Clio, Auto Express has suggested.

The publication has just voted the model best supermini in its used car honours list.

Clinching the title ahead of the Ford Fiesta, the Fiat Grande Punto and the Honda Jazz, the magazine was particularly impressed with the vehicle's low running costs, good fuel economy, stylish design and wide range of engine options.

Mike Brewer, former used car dealer turned TV presenter, said: "The Renault is fine-looking with a great image and fun handling."

He added although it was a competitive category, the Clio was judged to be more desirable than its rivals, especially with younger motorists.

Renault put the model's success down to the fact that it was dedicated to continually improving product quality.

Meanwhile, the carmaker has announced it will launch an updated Scenic range in 2009.
