19 September 2008 Police step up efforts to catch uninsured drivers
A number of agencies in West Yorkshire have joined forces with the police in order to crackdown on a variety of problems which are having a negative impact on the quality of life for local residents. This includes trying to prevent motorists who put other people's safety at risk by driving without car insurance.
A two-day scheme saw the police catch seven drivers who did not have the necessary cover.
The groups working together on the initiative included the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, crime reduction officers, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency and a number of local councillors.
Huddersfield south neighbourhood policing team sergeant John McFadzean said: "Through working with our partners in this manner, we are able to share intelligence and act upon it almost straight away."
He stated he was delighted with the progress made so far and was hopeful the scheme would have a positive impact on local communities.
This comes after the Motor Insurers' Bureau said the high numbers of uninsured drivers across the UK revealed by their research did not come as a surprise.
