17 September 2008 Driving without van insurance 'is a serious crime'

People who drive without van insurance are underestimating the severity of their crime, the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) has said.

However, communications assistant Lorraine Preston stated a renewed government crackdown should help change attitudes.

She claimed significant progress had already been made by the authorities who had been targeting areas where the problem was most prevalent and added the government was due to reveal the next phase in its fight against motorists who drive without cover in the coming months.

Ms Preston said: "The police and MIB along with the government are determined to change both the perceptions and behaviour of the uninsured into those of honest motorists."

This comes after recent research by MIB revealed there were an estimated two million vehicles without the necessary cover on roads in the UK.

It also highlighted 150,000 uninsured cars, vans and motorcycles had been seized during 2007.

Some 40 per cent of those vehicles were eventually crushed or disposed of.
