15 September 2008 New road signs 'could reduce number of car insurance claims'

Road signs to be reviewed Drivers who are keen to avoid making a claim on their car insurance may be keen to get involved in a review of road signs across the UK.

The government has announced it will hold the biggest consultation on the issue in 40 years.

According to the Department for Transport the overhaul should help to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents.

Transport minister Rosie Winterton said: "Road conditions have changed dramatically over the years and road signs need to keep pace with that change to provide the best information possible to all road users."

She added improving traffic signs should help reduce congestion and cut CO2 emissions.

Ms Winterton stated the government was keen to use the latest technology to bring roads up to date but wanted to avoid cluttering streets with unnecessary signs.

Earlier this month, the Department for Transport announced new motorists would be given advice during their practical driving test on cutting emissions and saving fuel.
