11 September 2008 Risk of floods 'means home insurance is vital'

UK floods With the threat of flooding hanging over Britain, home insurance has never been more important, the Fair Investment Company has said.

However, despite the well-publicised damage to property caused by bad weather over recent years, research by the organisation has revealed 38 per cent of people in the UK do not have any cover in place at all.

The group's study also found men were less likely to take out home insurance protection than women.

Meanwhile, figures from the company Homecheck have shown some £214 billion worth of land, property and assets are at risk from flooding across England and Wales.

According to the Fair Investment Company this highlights the fact that those without sufficient home insurance could get caught out and find themselves facing a substantial clean up bill.

Commenting on the findings, spokesperson Rachael Stiles said: "With so many homes at risk due to poor flood defences, home insurance really is a necessity that should not be forgone."

Elsewhere, NFU Mutual advised people who were expecting flooding to turn off water, electric and gas supplies at the mains.
