09 September 2008 New survey highlights the best and the worst routes in Britain

Best and worst roads revealed A new survey has revealed the roads that car insurance customers might want to avoid and those they should make a special attempt to incorporate into their travels.

Research by Caterham Cars, the manufacturer of sports vehicles, has found the best and worst routes in Britain.

For those drivers keen to avoid making a claim on their car insurance policy, the A14 between Cambridge and Peterborough may be one road it is worth steering clear of.

This route was described as "accident rich", although it did not top the list of Britain's worst roads.

That accolade went to the clockwise section of the M25 from junction five through to 21.

In contrast, the most popular road in the UK was found to be the A57 between Glossop and Sheffield.

This stretch of tarmac – commonly known as snake pass – takes motorists through the Peak District.

Andy Noble from Caterham Cars said: "Due to the large amount of congestion motorists now face, it is often easy to forget how enjoyable driving can be."

However, he pointed out that once you get off the beaten track there are countless roads that remind you of how much fun you can have behind the wheel.
