Scottish drivers caught in crackdown. Drivers in Scotland using their mobile phones behind the wheel have been caught out as part of a 24-hour crackdown, it has been reported.

According to the Edinburgh Evening News, some 313 motorists were found to be breaking the law in such a manner.

It added that in the Lothian and Borders region 24 motorists were found to be chatting or texting while in control of their vehicle.

Such an act could have a serious effect on a car insurance policy, should cover firms decide that drivers are a risk on the road.

Chief Superintendent Michael McCormick from the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland commented that officials are "concerned" with motorists flouting the law.

He said: "Our officers are on the roads 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year, enforcing road traffic safety laws for the benefit of all road users."

In February 2007, new legislation introduced by the Department for Transport meant that drivers caught using phones behind the wheel face a £60 fine or three-point licence penalty.
