03 September 2008 Satnav technology 'could help reduce speeding offences'

Satnav technology equipped with a speed camera detector could help reduce the number of drivers who break the speed limit on UK roads, RoadPilot has asserted.

A recent study carried out by the firm found that 71 per cent of drivers admit to speeding on more than one-quarter of journeys they take.

In addition, some 60 per cent of drivers surveyed thought that the 70 mph speed limit on dual carriageways and motorways should be increased.

However, this need for speed could have dangerous implications for British motorists, according to James Flynn, chief executive officer of RoadPilot.

"Given the number of people that admit to speeding on a regular basis ... there is potentially a very large number of people in danger of being fined, incurring penalty points or even losing their licences," he said.

Mr Flynn added that drivers with a tendency to speed may benefit from a speed camera detector in their vehicle, which could help them avoid penalty points and increased car insurance premiums.

Meanwhile, a report published in the Telegraph last month indicated that some eight out of ten drivers caught speeding in Calais in France are British.

Traffic officers from Kent have been called in to help French police patrol the A26 motorway south of Calais, where a number of speeding offences are made.
