03 September 2008 Uninsured drivers are "a massive problem"
Uninsured drivers in the UK remain a "massive problem", with an estimated two million vehicles without insurance on British roads, according to the British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba). And while new rules that allow police to seize uninsured vehicles at the roadside have made a "dent in the problem", Biba technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill asserts that more needs to be done.
"Uninsured drivers kill a lot of people and there is a lot of cost for the insured motorists out there and we really want to see that sorted out," he said.
Mr Trudgill added that he is set to meet with transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick to discuss the enforcement regime for dealing with drivers without car insurance.
According to figures released in March 2008 by the Motor Insurance Bureau, some 150,000 vehicles without insurance were seized in 2007.
The group asserted that this figure breaks down to one vehicle seized every three minutes.
