02 September 2008 Electricty voted 'most viable' alternative to petrol

A total of 93 per cent of respondents to a recent survey cited electricity as a viable fuel alternative to petrol in the coming years, an environmentally-conscious website has reported.

The poll, undertaken by TheGreenCarWebsite.com, found that a total of 93 per cent of respondents said they felt electricity was the top alternative fuel, with 49 per cent suggesting that electricity used to power cars should be generated through renewable means.

An additional 44 per cent said that regardless of the orginating source, electricity is a viable alternative fuel option.

Hybrid vehicles, such as the Toyota Prius, have become popular in recent years. This week, it emerged that a new agreement between Toyota and GMB will see almost 500 Prius vehicles added to the general union's fleet during the next five years.

And while TheGreenCarWebsite.com suggested that traditional combustion engines often offer a clearer indication of how many carbon emissions they release per kilometre, technology for determining the carbon footprint of electric-powered cars is improving.

The Prius, for example, emits 104 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre, according to Toyota.
