28 August 2008 Volvo announces sales success over 2008

Volvo sales have gone up. Drivers in the UK are paying more to travel in their vehicles, according to new research.

Statistics released by price comparison website uSwitch.com show that people are now expending an average of £2,395 each - up from £1,787 - per year for car insurance, servicing, road tax and petrol.

In total, the body has estimated that this comes to a grand total of £75 billion due to the credit crunch.

A spokesman for the firm commented that the cost of motoring will put some people off driving altogether.

"The rising cost could lead to more uninsured drivers on our roads and people invalidating their insurance by driving unsafe vehicles as they can no longer afford proper maintenance," said the official.

Meanwhile, the Guardian has reported that the credit crunch has recently resulted in fewer people taking driving lessons, according to figures from Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.
