28 August 2008 'Blinking can help save drowsy motorists'

Blinking can tell drivers when they are tired. Drivers can use one of their body's natural reactions in order to protect themselves against fatigue on the road, it has been claimed.

GEM Motoring Assist has stated that people blink more than the average amount of ten times per minute when they are bored or tired.

This is a good way in which people can naturally find out that they can no longer concentrate on the road, according to chief executive of the breakdown firm David Williams.

Indeed, it may be that this also helps people save on their car insurance policies in the future, as they could make fewer claims.

Mr Williams said: "It is a built-in early warning system that gives us the opportunity to head for the nearest motorway service area or other refuge from the road before our driving becomes erratic and potentially dangerous."

GEM was recently rated the best roadside breakdown firm by Auto Express, finishing ahead of the AA, RAC and Green Flag.
