People can save on their car insurance policies by shopping around for a good deal, it has been claimed.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), significant savings can be made by motorists by scouring the market before deciding on a policy for their vehicles.

Malcolm Tarling, speaking on behalf of the ABI, commented that while it is predicted that cover costs will rise, the sector is still a competitive market.

But the official warned drivers that they should not be blinded by price.

"Shopping around is the best way of cutting the cost of your insurance. But make sure you shop around and find a policy that actually has the cover you want," said the expert.

The ABI has around 400 companies in its membership. Combined, they provide 94 per cent of the domestic insurance services sold to British customers.
