Automobile manufacturer Volkswagen (VW) has taken over from Ford as the third biggest automaker in terms of sales, the firm has announced.

It stated that there were some 3.31 million VW models sold in the first half of the year - an increase of 7.2 per cent over figures from 2007, car insurance customers may be interested to know.

Meanwhile, it added that Ford could only shift 3.22 million units during the same period.

Volkswagen chairman of the board of management Prof Dr Martin Winterkorn said the group is "delighted" with its new position in the market.

"This shows that we are on the right track with our ever-stronger international presence and, above all, our product program. We will systematically push ahead with our growth course even in the present difficult market environment," said the official.

VW has recently launched a direct mail campaign designed to sell its new Passat CC luxury coupe model.
