26 August 2008 Journeys 'getting quicker' with reduced congestion
Traffic congestion is down by 12 per cent from 2007 thanks to high fuel costs and the credit crunch, it has been claimed. In news to interest car insurance holders, Trafficmaster and the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Foundation found the drop in traffic across Britain's motorways and trunk roads when comparing January to June 2007 to the same period this year.
This has led to journeys becoming 0.3 per cent quicker, although they are still 2.6 per cent longer than in 2005.
Motorists are also driving more slowly to conserve fuel, with the average motorway speed falling from 63.3 mph to 62.2 mph in the last year.
Sheila Rainger of the RAC Foundation said the easing of congestion was positive news in an "otherwise bleak picture for UK motorists".
She added that it is still necessary to invest in congestion-busting strategies, as the current situation is "only a breathing space for policymakers".
Earlier this year, the RAC urged drivers to check the tread of their tyres, noting that 45 per cent of motorists do not know the minimum legal tread depth.
