22 August 2008 Fraudulent driving test sitters to be jailed

Fraudulent drivers could face jail. Motorists who sit driving tests on behalf of other people are to be jailed if caught, according to an automobile body.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has revealed that it investigates all reported cases of the crime alongside criminal justice bodies and the police.

It added that it is eager to preserve public safety and the integrity of the tests by prosecuting those who break the law in such a manner.

Those caught out could find that when they are released from prison, they have difficulty picking up a car insurance policy should cover firms judge them to be a road risk.

"Tackling impersonations is a key priority for the agency as offenders presents a significant danger to road safety," said DSA head of fraud & integrity Andrew Rice.

Meanwhile, the Telegraph earlier this month cited DSA figures showing that there were 168 cases of fraudulent driving tests in the UK last year.
