07 August 2008 New female drivers 'pay less than men for cover'
Women motorists taking to the road pay less for their car insurance policies than men, new research has found.According to a moneysupermarket.com study, an initial policy for a man would be approximately £2,841 while women can expect to pay £1,200 less for cover.
It added that 42 per cent of female motorists pass their practical test the first time they take it.
Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at the price comparison website, commented that it is also a good idea to consider advanced lessons after passing the test.
"I advise taking a Pass Plus course, adding an older driver to your policy and consider buying an older car which may be easier to insure," said the official.
Celebrity female driver Maureen Rees famously took a number of attempts to pass her driving test.
She eventually did pass - even though she ran over the foot of her husband Dave in the process.
