07 August 2008 Diesel registrations rise as petrol car sales fall
A rise in vehicles being sold with diesel engines has been recorded as petrol-based models fall in demand, it has been reported.Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that there has been a 7.3 per cent rise in the number of diesel automobiles sold during 2008.
The organisation stated that this comes as a 13 per cent fall has been recorded for petrol engine-based purchases.
It added that demand for alternatively-fuelled vehicles rose, with some 1,479 cars purchased in the last month - something which could see drivers pick up cheap car insurance policies if cover firms reward those making strides to reduce their carbon footprint.
However, "[the motor industry] needs the support of the government in order to encourage the uptake of lower-emitting vehicles", remarked SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.
A recent TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk blog suggests that those who go green in their vehicles will save money, according to Money News.
