Drivers picking up the new 2008 Jeep Cherokee will gain a car completely different to the previous version, the company has claimed.

A number of features have been added to the model, including a new full-time four-wheel-drive system and an optional Sky Slider, which is a canvas roof that can be fully opened.

Car insurance customers will also be able to pick up the model with right-hand drive and diesel engine options - which may have an influence on their policies if cover firms choose to reward eco-efficient models.

"The leather treatments to seats, handbrake and gear shifter, grab handles, door panels and centre console create a luxurious and refined feel," commented Nigel Land, marketing director of Chrysler UK.

Jeep's original Cherokee was a full-size SUV available in both two and four-door variations produced between 1974 and 1983.

It was mainly developed in the Toledo area of Ohio.
