04 August 2008 Green converts 'could be paid'

Gas-guzzlers could be paid to go green. The government could soon be paying motorists a subsidy in order to switch from their gas-guzzling vehicles to more environmentally-friendly ones.

Officials are looking at the method as one in which to get more people to reduce their carbon footprint on the road, car insurance customers may be interested to know.

It may be that this cuts road tax costs, as Band F vehicles like the VW Passat, Renault Espace and Citroen C8 are expected to cost drivers up to £455 per year in such charges by 2010.

However, Tim Yeo from the Conservative Party has stated that the move should not exclude any motorists.

"The Treasury must also work to ensure these changes are not unfair to vulnerable groups. This includes looking at paying people to trade in their existing high-emission cars," he said.

Meanwhile, Hollywood movie star Cameron Diaz has been spotted showing off her green credentials.

The Charlie's Angels actress has been travelling in a Toyota Prius.
