29 July 2008 Smoking 'can result in vehicle depreciation'
People who smoke in their vehicles may unwittingly be decreasing its value, it has been claimed.Research conducted by the British Car Auctions (BCA) group has highlighted presentation as a key factor in the used car market, particularly in determining price.
It added that the stains and smell left by smoking can seriously affect the condition of an automobile, while it could also damage a car insurance policy if someone is caught lighting up behind the wheel and considered a risk.
BCA PR manager Tim Naylor stated that as a result employers should keep drivers from smoking in vehicles when they are working.
"This will avoid the lingering smell of cigarettes hanging in the interior as well as eliminate the risk of discolouring and leaving scorch marks on the interior trim or upholstery," the official remarked.
Coming into effect last year, the ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces includes workplaces, such as taxis and lorry cabs, meaning drivers of these vehicles cannot light up while travelling.
