Automobile manufacturer Fiat is appealing to all would-be inventors to get involved in its latest competition.

The Smiles Per Hour Design Competition invites people to submit amusing and interesting ways to pass the time on a car journey.

It could be anything - although it should be safe and not invalidate a car insurance policy, with Fiat offering £50,000 for the best entry.

Suzi Perry from TV's The Gadget Show remarked that the contest is "bound to generate some fantastic prototypes".

"We're famous in this country for our great inventors and I'm sure today's budding designers can match them all the way," said the television presenter.

Last week, Fiat's 500 supermini, launched in January, was awarded top prize in the Green Supermini category at this year's first ever What Car? Green Awards, held at the British International Motor Show at ExCeL London.
