24 July 2008 SMMT chief champions motor industry's 'honesty'
The chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has called the industry "honest and transparent" when it comes to environmental performance.Paul Everitt remarked that average new car tailpipe emissions are down 13 per cent over the last ten years, adding that low carbon cars are "becoming commonplace" on the market.
And people who pick up environmentally-friendly vehicles could find they gain cheap car insurance policies in the process, as cover firms may reward their eco-friendly stance.
Mr Everitt also pointed out the benefits of travelling in a vehicle emitting a smaller amount of CO2.
"Quite simply, low carbon cars use less fuel. There is a simple link between lower emissions and lower running costs," he said.
This comes as SMMT figures show a slight fall in used car and light commercial vehicle sales over the first quarter of 2008 of 1.1 per cent and 0.5 per cent.
