21 July 2008 Residents call for road safety precautions
Residents of two roads in Burton have spoken out against speeding motorists in the area, it has been reported.According to the Burton Mail, more than 200 people on Donisthorpe Lane, Moira and Atherstone Road in Measham have signed petitions to improve local road safety.
It could be that if Leicestershire county council chooses to install new features, it brings down the cost of car insurance in the area.
This is because cover companies could decide that the region is safer and reduce the prices of its policies as a result.
"We at least need signs reminding drivers of the 30mph speed limit because there have been so many accidents and near-misses," said one resident, who chose to remain anonymous.
Meanwhile, statistics released by the Department for Transport show a fall in the number of UK road deaths last year.
There were some 2,943 fatalities in 2007, compared to 3,150 in 2006.
