14 July 2008 Fluorescent jacket 'must' be carried in France

Fluorescent jackets required by drivers in France. Motorists from the UK travelling in France must carry a fluorescent jacket in their vehicles or risk being handed an on-the-spot fine, it has been reported.

The Daily Mail stated that authorities in the country can stop drivers and give them a £100 notice if they fail to produce the item

Such a fine could have far-reaching effects on drivers' car insurance policies, as cover firms could choose to increase costs if they view motorists as a risk on the road.

But the new law is "a racket", according to 50-year-old Michael Fisher, who will this year be heading to France for a holiday.

"It's just a way of making money ... I steer ferries between England and France for a living and I didn't know about this law change, so what chance has anyone else got?" he said.

Meanwhile, research from Tesco earlier in the month revealed that van drivers are the safest motorists on British highways.
