11 July 2008 Motorists 'fraudulently using insurance to cover debts'
Drivers in the UK are making fraudulent car insurance claims to cover their debts, it has been claimed. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has commented that one vehicle owner pushed his car over a cliff so he could use the repayment to meet hire purchase costs.
It added that over the last three years, the number of fraudulent claims in the UK has gone up by 70 per cent.
According to Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, insurance fraud is not a crime without victims.
The expert said: "Honest motorists pay through higher insurance premiums - an extra £40 a year on average."
This comes after research from Vision Express conducted at the Royal Highland Show concluded that one in four motorists has difficulty making out a number plate from 20.5 metres, even in good weather.
