09 July 2008 Cambridge drivers ditching cars to cut congestion

New car club looks to cut congestion. Motorists in Cambridge are looking to sidestep the threat of congestion and rising petrol costs by joining a car club, it has been reported.

According to Cambridge News, the club involves a £49.50 annual membership to a company named Streetcar, which hires vehicles to drivers as and when they need them.

Included in the cost are car insurance, tax and 30 miles free petrol per day, but while there is a minimum times of 30 minutes, motorists can use the vehicle for as long as they like.

Cambridge city council official Sian Reid remarked that the body is "really pleased" at the success of the club.

She said: "It's given us the confidence to make it a requirement on all of the big growth sites ... I think it must be word of mouth getting it going. People use it and tell their friends about it."

This comes as the Liverpool Echo has reported that transport officials have promised there will be no congestion charge in the city in the near future.
