09 July 2008 New car CO2 output falls over Q2
The average amount of CO2 emitted by a new car fell in the second quarter of 2008 compared to 2007, it has been reported.Research from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, cited by Clean Green Cars, has found that there was a 3.64 per cent drop over the period against figures from one year earlier.
This follows on from a 3.18 per cent fall in emissions from January to June 2008 against statistics from 12 months previous.
It could be that motorists driving a greener automobile find that car insurance companies offer them discounts on policies as a result.
Jay Nagley, speaking on behalf of Clean Green Cars, remarked that increasing petrol prices have sparked the fall.
He said: "Fuel costs, not environmental concerns, have done more to accelerate the shift to fuel efficient cars than any other initiative ... Saving money still trumps saving the planet when it comes to buying a new car."
This week's G8 summit saw officials from around the world discuss the introduction of electric cars rather than petrol models.
