09 July 2008 Leeds motorists paying £15m to park
Drivers in Leeds are paying out close to £15 million in fines and costs for parking every year, it has been reported.Statistics from the Department of Communities and Local Government show that this is twice as much as the amount being paid four years ago, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.
The extra cost may be particularly unwelcome in addition to expensive car insurance prices and road tax bills.
But a spokeswoman for Leeds council remarked that the city council's parking prices are "very competitive" compared to the city centre.
"We regularly check the markets locally and nationally and find that our charges for parking services are around 40 per cent less than that in the private sector," she said.
This comes as the Daily Post has reported that parking fines in four areas of north Wales totalled over £900,000 in the last year.
