08 July 2008 Caution urged over biofuels approach
There needs to be more evidence in order to determine the sustainability of biofuels, according to a new government review.Launched by transport secretary Ruth Kelly and environment secretary Hilary Benn, the paper states that the current stance on biofuels should not be completely abandoned, but amended.
It added that the substances can play a part when it comes to battling climate change, stating that by 2020 approximately 338 to 371 million tonnes of CO2 will have been saved due to their use.
Ruth Kelly remarked that biofuels can be "a useful contribution to mitigating climate change" but only if they are produced in the right way.
"We should take a precautionary approach over the next few years ... Our policy should be based on the best possible science and as the evidence evolves, so too should our policy evolve with it," she said.
This comes as Road Transport has reported that eco-friendly haulage company JPM Eco Logistics has expanded its fleet with three new Volvos.
