07 July 2008 Anti-fuel tax petition set up by What Car?

Petition launched against high petrol costs A petition has been launched by automobile magazine What Car? in an attempt to rally drivers against rising fuel tax costs.

The publication has stated that around £19 million in duty is paid by drivers across the UK every day.

In addition, the body estimated that motorists will spend some £9 billion on petrol VAT in June 2008, which is up £2 billion on the take from one year previous.

Motorists may struggle to pay for car insurance and road tax costs in the wake of the extra fuel expense.

Some people "just can't afford to fill up their car", commented What Car? editor Steve Fowler.

"Every motorist would surely welcome billions of pounds more spending on transport ... We're all being hit hard by price squeezes, so some cash for motorists could help to take the edge off them," said the official.

Last month, haulage motorists from across Britain presented prime minister Gordon Brown with an open letter contesting increasing fuel costs in the UK.
