Van drivers are the safest motorists using the roads, new research has found.

According to a study from Tesco, fewer claims are made on van insurance policies than any other kind of cover.

The firm stated that in addition one in five people using vans have had extra training sessions in their vehicles in order to make them more proficient behind the wheel.

Allan Burns, speaking for the company, remarked that the traditional view of van drivers is misinformed.

"Van drivers are often stereotyped as rogues of the road however, our own records show that van drivers are actually very safe drivers and in our eyes they deserve a good insurance rate," he said.

This comes as Direct Line for Business has reminded van owners to refrain from lighting up a cigarette behind the wheel.

Some 7.5 million drivers are unaware that the smoking ban applies to work vehicles.
