02 July 2008 New campaign tells car thieves: Don't Bother
Police officers in South Gloucestershire have launched a new campaign to help motorists avoid becoming a victim of vehicle crime.Information packs entitled Don't Bother feature advice on how drivers can deter thieves and have been handed out by officials from the Avon and Somerset constabulary.
According to the body, there have been 13 incidents of vehicle crime in Patchway, Soundwell and Kingswood during June.
The message from police is "simple", remarked police sergeant Kevin Wilkinson of the South Gloucestershire Community Safety Team.
He said: "Take portable valuables out of the vehicle completely and clean the marks off the windscreen before leaving your car or van parked overnight."
Figures from the Home Office show that vehicle crime has fallen 61 per cent since its peak in 1995.
In addition, the body stated that some 1.7 million automobile-related thefts took place from 2006 to 2007.
