30 June 2008 Police employ SmartWater to track vehicles

Police are using a new technique to recover vehicles. Law enforcement officials in South Yorkshire have employed a new liquid-based method of keeping track of stolen goods, it has been reported.

The Star has stated that people in the town can have their vehicles marked with SmartWater - a forensically-encoded substance which allows them to be recovered should they be taken.

It may be that this helps bring down the cost of car insurance in the area if it proves to be successful, as cover firms could view it as an indication that the region is safer.

Recover of vehicles suing SmartWater could also result in fewer claims being made in the first place.

The news comes as police in Manchester have reported a decline in automobile crime in the city, a local news source has reported.

According to the Manchester Evening News, statistics released by the city's police force show a 19.1 per cent fall compared to figures from one year earlier.
