30 June 2008 Cost of northern fuel 'up 50% in two years'
There has been a 50 per cent increase in the cost of petrol in the north in the last two years, new statistics have shown.A litre of diesel at a garage in Northumberland set motorists back 90.9p in January 2006, but today it will cost them 136.2p, according to the Sunday Sun.
It could be that this cost - around £6 per gallon - is too expensive for drivers who have high car insurance and road tax costs to pay.
Brendan Mcloughlin, founder of Petrolprices.com, remarked that this represents a "landmark price".
"[The figure] highlights how much fuel has risen. Diesel is more economical, so many are switching to diesel cars, but this increases demand and pushes the price up further," commented the expert.
This follows on from protests earlier this year which saw hauliers from across the UK rally against the cost of fuel.
