26 June 2008 Motorists warned of 'dangerous' second-hand cars

Secondhand cars 'could be a danger' It is important that motorists ensure the secondhand vehicles they buy are in good condition, it has been claimed.

Hertfordshire Trading Standards officials went undercover and bought eight cars - five of which they later found to be unroadworthy, according to the Borehamwood and Elstree Times.

Buying a used vehicle for a cheap price may seem like a good idea, but secondhand models could be more likely to break down and result in expensive repair and car insurance bills.

Young motorists should not be taken in by low prices, remarked county councillor Richard Smith.

"Consumers should buy from legitimate businesses that inspect the vehicles before putting them on sale. If we can prevent just one accident by urging drivers to get cars checked before they buy, it will have been worth it," he added.

Sainsbury's Finance recently revealed that eight per cent fewer people intended to buy a used car between March and August 2008, according to Motors Today.
