Motorists embarking on a road trip which saves them money can head to Spain, a local news source has reported.

According to Post Office research, the country has cheaper motoring costs than France, Germany and the UK.

It added that cheap diesel costs - at 94p per litre, the least expensive in the eurozone - and low car hire prices make it a good deal for thrifty motorists.

Those already paying out for high road tax bills and car insurance policies may particularly appreciate the cheaper alternative Spain offers.

In addition, the group found that the cost of hiring a vehicle in Spain for three days along with 200 miles-worth of fuel to be £122, compared to Europe's highest - £248 in Greece.

Avis Rent a Car research recently stated that people heading abroad this summer should consider hiring a vehicle.
