24 June 2008 High-level meeting sees road safety on agenda
Road safety was on the agenda at a high-level transport meeting in Glasgow this week.Officials met at the headquarters of the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) to discuss the national Safe Road Use programme - set up to encourage greater understanding among motorists.
Indeed, it may be that the scheme could help to bring down the cost of car insurance, as cover firms could decrease prices if the roads become safer.
Rosemary Thew, chief executive of the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), remarked that the SQA and DSA "will give fresh insight" to new drivers.
She said: "We believe we need a fresh cultural and educational approach to improving driving standards and we have consulted with experts to achieve this."
This follows the DSA's decision to write to motorists who took their driving test on a Saturday after October 2005, informing them that an overcharging error means they can pick up a £10.50 refund.
