23 June 2008 New solar vehicle 'could cut petrol costs'

Electric cars 'could alleviate petrol costs' The high cost of petrol for drivers in Britain could be alleviated with the invention of a new solar-powered vehicle.

Sir James Dyson, the man who developed the bagless vacuum cleaner and is worth in excess of £800 million, is behind the model, according to the Daily Mail.

He has stated that the popularity of the electric car will grow in the next ten years, with their prevalence surpassing that of the traditional petrol-based vehicles.

Motorists could find that the money they save on petrol helps them pay expensive car insurance and road tax bills.

"Electric cars are seen as city cars and to go 30mph is quite enough, but in the future that will change. An electric motor can go to very high speeds," commented Sir James.

The announcement of the project comes 23 years after Sir Clive Sinclair launched the ill-fated Sinclair C5 - a battery-powered model with a £400 price tag.
