23 June 2008 Sat nav mix-ups 'caused by northern lights'

Sat nav systems could be interfered with. A fault with a satellite navigation (sat nav) system could be caused by the northern lights display, it has been claimed.

Research from the University of Bath has found that the natural aurora feature can interfere with satellite signals 12,600 miles above the earth, according to the Daily Mail.

It could be that this has an effect on car insurance policies in the region, as incorrect instructions from a sat nav device have the potential to cause an accident.

"Although most people in the UK can't see the aurora when they are happening because of cloud or ambient light, they can still affect the GPS signal," lead researcher Professor Cathryn Mitchell commented to the Sunday Telegraph.

Occurring mostly from September to October and March to April every year, the northern lights is a natural coloured light display which forms above polar areas of the northern hemisphere.
