20 June 2008 Drink-driving initiative catches out 55

Drink-drivers caught in Leicestershire. Police in Leicestershire found 55 motorists in the region over the drink-drive limit as part of a campaign against the crime, a local news source has reported.

Some 812 drivers were breathalysed as part of the scheme, with those caught out now facing a 12-month ban from the road, according to Loughborough News.

Those who tested positive may find that they have difficulty taking out a car insurance policy in the future, as cover firms could judge them to be a risk on the road.

Most drivers were caught out between 22:00 and 04:00 BST, commented John Budulis from the Leicestershire constabulary.

"It's important to remember that you could still be over the legal alcohol limit the morning after the night before. These results also show that officers are breathalysing motorists whatever the time of day or night," said the official.

The UK's current legal alcohol limit is less than 80mg per 100ml of blood.
